STEM Strategies Lesson Plan

Planning the STEM Strategies Lesson Plan was very different than any lesson plan I have ever done in the past. I thought all of the resources were very interesting and informative for this week. I might not have done the lesson plan correct, but I didn't feel that the resources and the template correlated together. Again, it may be because I did something wrong. The lesson plans that I have done are aimed at explaining the steps or process of the lesson, while making note of the standards, evaluation, materials, procedures, etc. The main layout focuses on the entire lesson to allow a substitute to quickly fill in if needed. This lesson plan format would be completely foreign to a substitute.

I appreciated how the "Five E's" provided me with ideas and examples of ways to engage, explore, explain, elaborate and extend, and evaluate the lesson. I am always looking for ways to make a lesson better. The examples in the Five E's just tells me without me having to dig for the information. Great resources like that keep me from having to "re-invent the wheel" which is always nice to avoid.

  1. Okay... how to I comment on someone's direct post? In the meantime, Caitlin, I agree with you, this lesson plan format is not very practical.

  2. Hi Shannon!

I have the same concerns about whether or not my lesson plan was done right. I felt that the lesson plan was over thought and not practical. In my opinion, it would be better suited for an undergrad class. Then again, if potential teachers thought that's what lesson planning is like, they might abandon the profession!

I also appreciated the 5 E's and will probably incorporate it into my future lesson plans. However, I think the rest of the lesson plan was of no benefit to me.

  3. Hi Shannon,

I also agree that this lesson plan is a bit much. I know that my lesson is good and meets the requirements, but I am not sure if I filled out the form correctly.

I can't even imagine having a sub trying to figure this lesson plan template out. Most of the subs in my district have either never had any teacher preparation or have been out of teaching for 10 plus years. I think this lesson could have been very valuable to many of us in the class, but feel that the overly detailed, confusing nature of the template really ruined it for many.

  4. Hello Shannon,
You page is wonderful! I, too agree that this lesson plan was challenging. Even though the 5 e's model enables us to have a detailed lesson plan, the planning process itself is exhausting. We use this model in my district and it is tiring at times.

  5. Hi Shannon

I don't know if I did my lesson right either. The lesson plan template was odd and confusing. The 5 E's seem to be helpful, but that is not the way I normally plan my lessons.

  6. It sounds like many of us found the 5 E's lesson plan model to be quite a challenge to fill out. I too managed to fill mine out completely but I'm not sure if I did so correctly. I could not imagine having to fill this out for every lesson, but I do see it being beneficial to new teacher just starting off in the field.
